The birthday cake is the only cake that has to do two jobs at once. It has to look right when the candles are lit — the moment that gets photographed and remembered. And it has to taste right when the photograph is over and the slices come out.

For thirty years, Dhaka has had two parallel birthday cake traditions running side by side. The bakery cake — soft, generous, predictable — and the home-baked cake, made by an aunt who has done it for forty birthdays in a row. We exist somewhere between the two, deliberately. Generous enough to share, careful enough to remember.

The last decade has brought a third tradition — the bento. Single-serving, hand-piped messages, designed to be opened on camera. We resisted these for fourteen months and were wrong to. The format is genuinely different, and we now make some of the most precise bento cakes in the city.

How we approach birthdays: we don't sell the same cake to a five-year-old and a forty-five-year-old. The five-year-old gets buttercream, sprinkles, a single inscription. The forty-five-year-old gets less sugar, more depth, a tier of dark chocolate ganache. We ask, every time, which one we're making.

Practical guide: for under-10s, order a 1 kg buttercream cake — Black Forest, vanilla, or pink mousse work universally. For teens, jar cakes for the friend group plus a bento for the moment. For adults, a single 1.5 kg layered cake with a serious flavour — truffle, tiramisu, or our coffee cake — outperforms anything fancier.
